Isto não é o paraíso [This is not paradise]
Isabel Villalba e Alexandra Ungern-Sternberg
THE WORKS PRESENTED IN THIS SINGULAR SECTION OF ROSA BARREIROS’ PRODUCTION, INVITE US ON AN IMAGINARY JOURNEY, WITH A CERTAIN DOSE OF HUMOR WHERE PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS OF PEOPLE, ANIMALS OR FANTASTIC, dreamlike beings, prompt questions and awaken the interest of those who observe them.
Improbable poses, comic gestures and cross-eyed and curious looks, sometimes ironic, almost reveal a false naivety of these characters. Departing from social disagreements, consumerism and the political, economic and social chaos in which we live, Rosa seems to capture what disturbs her in what she hears, sees or witnesses with broad, quick and urgent gestures, without solutions or ideological intentions.
In the video Rosa looks for a new aspect where she summons the viewer to action, exploring, through movement, a new bias of this disturbing gaze. What is subtly implied in her paintings now takes on a new dimension, proposing a route where the participants walk blind with a paper bag on their heads, with no fixed destination, accompanied by each other, however alone, in this brief route.
The artist offers us a critical view of our present, obstructing subjectivity and transforming the participant (whether casual or not) into a “consumer-consumed” object. We find ourselves trapped in our little world, naive and blind to what we see and trusting in the blind that guide us.
